Eddie Mathews, age 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 2, at home surrounded by his loving family and gracious care-givers. It seems fitting that Eddie chose Texas Independence Day to slip the bounds of this earth. He was a native Texan, born in a rural community near Leonard, Texas on May 5, 1923 who truly loved and enjoyed his home state. Eddie worked for the Texas Highway Department (now the Texas Department of Transportation) for thirty-six years, serving many of those years as the manager of the tourist bureau on the Texas-Oklahoma border. Many of Eddie’s friends have recounted to his family the vital role he played in planning their travels in the state. Eddie was truly an encyclopedia of information about Texas and its many wonders. Eddie married the love of his life, Mary Caskey, on June 14, 1943 in Kansas City, Kansas. He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Mary Mathews of Denison, TX; son, Jimmie Mathews and wife, Melissa of Austin, TX; daughter-in-law, Carol Mathews of Richardson, TX; grandchildren, Amber McCreery and husband, Ryan of Lee’s Summit, MO; Prairie Mathews of Dallas, TX; Ben Mathews and wife, Brittney of San Antonio, TX; Ethan Mathews of Washington, DC and Lucas Mathews of Dallas, TX. Eddie’s great grandchildren are Cadence, Campbell and Colby McCreery of Lee’s Summit, MO. Eddie was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Florence Mathews, and his son Ronnie Mathews. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at Chapel on the Hill in Cedarlawn Memorial Park with Rev. Roy Spore officiating. Family visitation will be held one hour prior to service time at the chapel. Honorary pallbearers are Ben Mathews, Ethan Mathews, Lucas Mathews, Frank Graves, Gary Hale and Marcus Hubbard. The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Gregory Carlson, and to Eddie’s devoted care-givers: Deb Talley, Anthanette Donaldson, Trish Engel, Alexes Fish and Jacqueline Carter, physical therapist Christy Caldwell, and Home Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Eddie’s name to Waples Memorial United Methodist Church, 830 West Main, Denison, TX 75020.
